The Value of RST’s ‘Learner Profile’

We’ve spent a lot of time exploring the characteristics we most want to nurture in our students, from Pre-Nursery through to Sixth Form. Over the past 12 months our teaching and learning groups have worked closely with staff and students at Rugby School Thailand (as well as with the Rugby Group in the UK) to create a bespoke set of learner profiles. These profiles that allow our teachers to better understand how each child learns, whilst enabling each learner to develop agency as they become more aware of how they learn best. They will be evergreen not just in teaching and learning, but across all aspects of school life, feeding into Rugby’s “whole person” philosophy. Here’s a look at what they are and why they’re so valuable:

RESILIENT

This characteristic teaches Rugby School Thailand students to learn from, embrace and overcome, failure; to meet challenges with grit, courage and perseverance; and to adjust objectives to meet a goal.

For our youngest learners In EYFS and KS1, this attribute will be brought to life as a “Concentrating Crocodile” and “Persevering Penguin”.

REFLECTIVE

This attribute helps students to evaluate their own learning characteristics and set goals to create awareness of the steps towards achieving them.

In EYFS & KS1 this attribute is an “Exploring Eagle” and “Proud Peacock”.

GLOBALLY MINDED

We want our students to value diversity and to actively engage with the local community and wider issues; this attribute is about displaying empathy and understanding moral responsibility.

In the Pre-Prep the children will learn this through our “Teamwork Tiger” & “Caring Koala”.

VERSATILE

Versatility in the face of challenges is an important skill in life. This characteristic encourages students to seek guidance to develop new skills and take appropriate risks to stimulate personal growth.

The little members of our community will primarily learn this through our “Go for it Gorilla”.

THINKERS

Always seeking knowledge and understanding, we strive for our students to think critically and problem-solve with questioning and curiosity.

In EYFS & KS1 this comes to life through our “Creative Chameleon” character.

COMMUNICATORS & COLLABORATORS

Simultaneously encouraging children to express themselves honestly, openly and confidently, whilst also teaching them to value and consider the views of others with an open mind. We hope all Rugby School Thailand students will seek opportunities to participate in, cooperate with and lead teamwork.

For the young ones, this is learnt through our “Exploring Eagle” and “Teamwork Tiger”.
