Baatyr: A Natural Leader

Baatyr showing his story in Pre-Prep

Baatyr came RST in September 2022, speaking little English. He was happy and positive from the start, but quiet due to his limited vocabulary. He joined Pre-Prep's Intensive English programme with Mr Roger and engaged well with it, making fast progress and moving onto less regular support with the EAL team.

Just one year on and Baatyr has been selected as part of the Pre-Prep ‘School Council’ based on his excellent speech during the election process! His English is now at a level where he can confidently communicate with others and use persuasive language - and this year he even wrote his own book, which he printed and shared with his classmates. His natural leadership skills have been able to shine, as he works with fellow student School Councilors to make ideas happen, and his kind nature means he is trusted by his peers. Most of his ideas involve raising money for those in need.

Beyond School Council, Baatyr is an exemplary student for his enthusiasm for getting involved in all aspects of school life. He embodies the ‘Go for it Gorilla’ Learner Profile, throwing himself into everything he can. He played Santa in the Year 2 Christmas show and has been selected to join the Junior Librarian team; a role which will see him working with written English, as he masters that side of language, too.

This bright young spark has gone from no English to great proficiency in a short time and his parents say it is now his preferred language at home! When talking about Baatyr, Miss Sarah commented “He is a shining example of a student who isn’t afraid to get things wrong. He gives 100% to everything! His language acquisition has been remarkable and he’ll often stop to chat with me at the gate in the morning; sometimes he has advice about how to run the School!”
