Teru | A Full Boarder

A boy throwing a football in a House tournament

Teru came on a student exchange in F Block (Year 9) and could speak little English on arrival. He enjoyed his experience so much - and was determined to improve his English - so he joined the School properly at the end of the exchange programme.

In what ways has RST played a pivotal role in your personal development and growth?

I care more about my future now, because of school life and the people around me. I think about the reason why I am doing things. People around me have been talking about university since E Block (Year 10) and thinking about their future which impressed me. It is the best personal development for me and it's because of the environment at RST.

I studied English and built friendships by playing sports I enjoy, like volleyball, because I thought sports required less English skills to connect!

I am now very passionate about volleyball, which is why I am the team captain. Recently we had a three day FOBISIA volleyball tournament at Shrewsbury in Bangkok; I was with friends who have been playing with me for 3 years and could see the good chemistry that’s developed between us.

How has boarding shaped your overall experience?

RST was my first time being a boarder, so I was nervous about moving to a new school with unfamiliar people. When I visited I saw the sense of camaraderie in boarding life and decided I wanted to come here and live overseas!

I shared a room with 3 different students for my first year and it helped me make friends and the development of my English skills a lot. The teachers and matron at the boarding house aided me a lot with settling into a new environment, and the house parents were extremely welcoming.

In the boarding house, there are routines that have helped me such as ‘lights out’ times. I quickly felt accustomed to such a routine and realised its benefits, like being more focused and motivated, and having a higher passion for sports.

What is your proudest achievement at RST?

One thing I am proud of is getting the best score in school for the UK maths challenge. I have been participating in this challenge since F block, and finally, after 3 years, I got the top score! I really like maths, wanted to get it and tried hard to achieve it.

What are your future goals and ambitions?

I want to be a person who can take care of friends. When they have problems, I want to be the person who can help them. At RST I am gaining academic knowledge and social skills, which cannot be made without teachers' and friends' help.

In future, I would also like to help teenagers with life skills, such as insurance and stocks, because I think they are very important skills for life.

I want to do as many things as I can here to gain the choice for the future, such as getting high grades to increase the range of university level.

Sum up boarding in 3 words…

Enjoyable. Camaraderie. Family.
