RST Student Stories

Discover the journeys some of our students made during their time in Sixth Form and life beyond School. We hope this gives you an idea of the breadth of student talent we cater for and how we tailor each individual’s experience.

We have many talented students choosing us for our facilities and world-class teachers; we’re able to push these students even further academically to help them achieve incredible results.

Tan | Class of 2022

Tan joined our Sixth Form ‘elite universities’ programme two years before he started university applications and the individually tailored curriculum saw him independently experimenting with a biomass generator system, complete MOOCs with the University of Michigan and undertake several work experience placements with different engineering firms.

Tan secured offers to read Mechanical Engineering at several top universities: Imperial College London, University College London, King’s College London and the University of Manchester. After gaining A*,A*,A*, A in his A levels, he was offered full scholarships to both UCL and Imperial, and has elected to join Imperial College London. Full scholarship offers are a rarity, and to receive two is exceptional; this is testament to Tan’s remarkable work ethic and passionate dedication to his chosen subject.

Georgia | Class of 2021

Georgia knew for a long time that she wanted to be an accountant. Receiving offers from all 5 UCAS applications, including the University of Bath and the University of Nottingham, she decided to accept a degree-level apprenticeship at leading global accounting firm, Ernst & Young. There were over 10,000 applicants for this position! As Head Girl at RST she was able to demonstrate her leadership qualities and having designed an accounting system for our charity efforts, she was able to stand out from thousands of applicants. Now in her second year at Ernst & Young, Georgia is enjoying working life and pleased with her decision. Essentially, she is on the same programme as the graduates who join EY, but three years ahead.

Sung Eun | Class of 2020

Sung Eun was our first Head Boy. During his time at RST he became an accomplished public speaker, set up a significant charity and helped establish the School’s student forum, amongst many other achievements. After gaining an impressive A*,A*,A*,A*, A* (AS) in his A-levels, Sung Eun joined London School of Economics (LSE) on a full scholarship. This is an extremely rare offer from such a prestigious university!

Alongside his undergraduate studies, Sung Eun has taught himself to code in several languages. Now in his final year of undergraduate study, he has already attracted significant interest from employers, and secured a placement at a block chain technology firm.

Achievement comes in many forms and looks different for every student. Here are some of the success stories of RST students who truly lived our School ethos: The Whole Person, The Whole Point.

Mikoto Image

Mikoto | Class of 2022

Mikoto joined us as part of an exchange programme from his school in Japan and, after the exchange programme was over, decided to stay at RST to complete his A Levels. With RST’s intensive English support, Mikoto took three A Levels, gaining A*,A*,A  and supplemented this by studying for a Certified Ethical Hacker Certificate.

He also completed UK Maths and Physics challenges along the way. Mikoto received offers to study Computer Science at University College London (UCL) and Cyber Security at the universities of Warwick, Coventry and Southampton. His first choice was UCL, so he was excited to be moving to London in September 2022.

Chris | Class of 2021

Chris received offers from all five of his UK university options to study Electrical Engineering, which included the Universities of Sheffield, Nottingham, Derby, Loughborough and Aston. Being able to use the world-class Design & Technology facilities at RST was what inspired Chris to pursue his dream of becoming an Engineer.

Despite gaining so many excellent offers from UK universities, in the end Chris accepted an offer of a full scholarship from King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology – a university much closer to home, but still a leading institution for his chosen subject.

Han Jiang 05

Han | Class of 2020

Han arrived at RST in LXX (Year 12) being able to speak some conversational English; she left RST two years later having achieved A*,A*,A*,A at A Level and went on to study Economics at the University of Manchester. During her time in the Sixth Form, Han was given intensive English support, which we were able to provide by tailoring her A Level curriculum. She was immersed in the English-speaking boarding house, which, alongside a very strong work ethic, meant her English language improved rapidly. Additionally, the varied enrichment programme helped Han to embed her learning in other areas and she was able to display her talents and abilities in many different ways.

The Sixth Form staff saw a pivotal moment in Han’s development during a four-day trek in the jungles of Borneo; the trip strengthened peer learning, a crucial element of rapid and sustained academic progress. Han’s speed of English acquisition came down to her resilience, peer integration and the support RST was able to offer. However, Han did not just learn English – our Sixth Form experience markedly improved her confidence, entrepreneurship and leadership qualities, all excellent life skills.
