Years 1 & 2 (Ages 5 to 7)
Rugby School Thailand offers the UK’s National Curriculum for our children in Key Stage One (ages 5-7 years old).
This programme covers English, Maths, Science, History and Geography, Art, Computing, Languages, Music, Swimming, Physical Education and Personal Development, which we call 'Whole Me' (PHSE).
Learning combines play and hands-on experiences (also known as continuous provision) while still providing opportunities for more formal learning. This is centred around children learning how to be self-motivated, encouraging them to ask questions, to have a go and not worry about mistakes, and to be creative. These skills naturally link to our Learner Profile characters, such as Go for it Gorilla and Creative Chameleon

Child-Led Learning: The Inquiry Approach
Our topic learning (Geography, History and Science) begins with an exciting ‘hook’ - a surprise event that sparks curiosity, such as dinosaur eggs in the Eco Garden or beanstalks appearing overnight. These moments prompt children to ask questions, solve problems and make cross-curricular connections. Their questions then guide each topic, keeping them motivated within our Inquiry Skills cycle. Topics change twice a term and integrate English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography and Art to provide a well-rounded learning experience.
mathematics
We follow the White Rose Maths mastery approach, exploring concepts in depth through real objects, drawings and practical activities while encouraging children to go “APE” - find the Answer, Prove it, and Explain their thinking. A Year 1 money question, for example, doesn’t end at “15 baht”; children use drawings, manipulatives or number lines to prove their answer and explain their method. This approach helps them understand the “why” behind the maths, building deep comprehension, confidence and strong foundations for a future shaped by advanced technology.

Reading
We use Monster Phonics for children aged 2 to 7. This is a UK Department for Education–approved scheme that teaches the 144 graphemes of the English language and is widely recommended for children learning English as a second language. The programme uses ten friendly monster characters to help children read, write and pronounce sounds in an engaging, effective way. We are proud to be the only Monster Phonics Ambassador School in Thailand, reflecting our commitment to high-quality early literacy learning.
Writing
‘Talk for Writing’ is an approach that develops confident, capable writers by first learning a story or text by heart, using actions and story maps to support memorisation. Children then adapt the story to make it their own before inventing a completely new version, following the motto: Imitate, Innovate, Invent! This method helps pupils build a rich bank of stories, vocabulary, and language structures, enabling them to understand what good writing sounds and feels like and to become more confident and creative in their own writing.

Additional Information
“By the end of the pre-prep phase, almost all children achieve outcomes significantly above standards in England.”
